Rainhill Coffee Roasters is a part of Caffè & Co. Ltd, an independent coffee shop and located in the historic village of Rainhill near Liverpool overlooking the George Stephenson Skew Bridge - the World’s first bridge that crossed a railway at an angle carrying traffic across Rainhill railway station, both of which are listed buildings. Rainhill Village was the scene of the Rainhill Trials in 1829 where Stephenson’s Rocket triumphed and led to the growth of the railways and the subsequent revolution. Established in 2011 as a specialty coffee shop, we began training the principles of specialty coffee in 2012. Specialty coffee was pretty much unheard of outside of London at that time. As the need to clear the streets of terrible coffee became more apparent, more and more people wanted to know the ‘secrets’ to creating better coffee. Not just better coffee but outstanding coffee. So in 2014 we became members of what was then known as the SCAE (Specialty Coffee Association of Europe). This later became the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) following the merger of the SCAE and the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America). Since then we are now an approved coffee training school for the SCA. Neil is the AST (authorised trainer), an SCA Diploma holder and currently qualified to teach the following accredited coffee training courses; SCA Introduction to Coffee SCA Barista Skills SCA Brewing Skills SCA Sensory Skills We always had plans to roast our own coffee eventually, and in 2020 we began. Coffee is a complex and intricate product. With hundreds of species and varieties of coffee, no two beans are the same. Roasting coffee requires a thorough understanding of not only the principles of coffee, brewing and barista skills but also a deep understanding of the sensory aspects of coffee.
